McGinnis Creek, CA

UPDATE: We recently learned that all three McGinnis Creek properties have been purchased by someone who wants to conserve the land! We will update this page as we learn more.

We are raising funds to purchase and preserve 160 acres of forest land in the Mattole watershed in northern California. This parcel contains 80 acres of old-growth Douglas Fir forest and the east fork of McGinnis Creek, a salmon-bearing stream.
This is one of three contiguous parcels for sale by owner which all contain old-growth. We are focusing on Property 2 (pictured below) because it contains the most significant stand of old-growth. We are open to the possibility of purchasing either or both of the other two properties in the event we can raise adequate funds.

Why this place is important

Forests have become a key component of climate mitigation policy and protecting critical wildlife habitat. This is especially true in mature and old-growth forests, which are dwindling (more than 95% of U.S. forests more than 100 years old have already been cut). Despite this, there are still numerous mature forests in the U.S. that are currently threatened by logging projects. The opportunity to protect McGinnis Creek is an opportunity to ensure that this forest and habitat remain intact in perpetuity.

It has been shown that protecting biodiversity also benefits the climate. By helping us preserve old-growth forest in the Mattole watershed, you will be helping us tackle these two environmental challenges at the same time.

This area of McGinnis Creek is a Northern Spotted Owl activity center.
